Translation in new module

I have a small issue:
I have created a very basic module and want to translate some text...
So in the xxx.tpl I edited the text to {l s='Text to translate' mod='blockxxx'}, then I went to BO and found "Text to translate" and translated it to Swedish.
However the English text is displayed no matter what language i choose.
So I kind of wonder if the .tpl file is aware of what language is choosen, or do I have to put something in the .php file?

Edit: So sorry, everything works. I was misunderstanding the code for a widget I included.
