Adding sub-category images in blocktopmenu links

Hi all,

I've been searching a way to call the sub-category images in the drop down menu for a site I'm creating, but I just can't find a solution anywhere. My experience tells me that, when I can't find an answer it in the internet, that's because It's a simple, silly problem! But this time I just can't find a way and it's driving me nuts for the last two days.

I've been trying to call the image ID from the subcategories in blocktopmenu.php but my php knowledge is very basic, I normally try to interpret the code I have and then I do a lot of copying and pasting with what I have. But this time I don't think I'll get results that way.

I deleted the code I had so I could do a fresh restart, so I have no code to show beside the original code of the blocktopmenu.php file.

Basically I've been trying to call the category image so it is placed inside the <li>. This way I want the default sub-category image to stand right next to the category name/link of the drop down menu.

I don't know if I'm editing the right lines, or even the right file! So I would really appreciate some help.

Well, I added $LINK_OBJECT_HERE but nothing changed. I must add the getCatImageLink function now, is that right?

Sorry, so many hours of looking at the code, nothing seems to make sense to me anymore -_-'

Ok, so thankfully I had a nice night of rest and I finally read your reply the way it should be read: correctly

So, now I have the following code:

I added the $link->getCatImageLink but the images still don't show.

Do I need to define a public function with getCatimageLink, or is this bit of code I added enough?

I'm sorry if I'm writing any atrocity here but my PHP knowledge is really scarce.

example of Link object usage:

remember to regenerate compilation of module .tpl files after change.

Well, I added the code in the right section of the php file and although it has no syntax errors, after refreshing the site it doesn't return anything. Site is completely white.

What I've made:

I just added this one line:

$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default');

I changed the location (I want the subcategory image to display, not the category one) and I also changed the size of the image to display ('large_default' instead of home_default).

So...what am I doing wrong? :\

but you used only this:

$this->getCategory((int)$child['id_category'], (int)$id_lang, (int)$child['id_shop']);
$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default');

you have to place results in $this->_menu variable

Sorry for the late reply!

After reading your last post I began testing other solutions because $link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'category_default') is indeed the right way to do what I'm trying to do, but nonetheless it doesn't work, rendering a blank page even though the syntax is correct.

I found that odd, so I searched all night through forums, read some php documentation, searched in other PHP files in Prestashop's folders and tried to understand what was going wrong cutting snippets of code here and there so I could understand what was causing the problem.

So, when I leave the code untouched the top menu looks like this:

Then, when I add the line...

$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default')

...I get the blank page.

After some tests I reached the following result:

The path to the image is displayed, but not the image. To get to this output I changed the previous code to this:

Link::getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default')

Replacing the arrow ( -> ) with the double colon ( :: ) shows that the function is correct and that something else is wrong. I know that one must be used in order to get static members an the other to get instances (making the arrow the correct one to use here), but I had to test the other way around.

What might be causing the blank page then?

Well I have been searching for solutions and testing, but everything leads to the same output: it displays the path to the image, or the site doesn't load anything at all rendering a blank page.

The line of code that Vekia sugested is undoubtedly correct, but for some reason it doesn't work. Does anyone have a clue?

Ok, I'm still searching and testing the error. I just found out I could output the errors adding ini_set('display_errors', 'on'); to the file "config.inc.php."

Now I know that the problem is a fatal error:

The blocktopmenu.php was modified to create a new hook, so I leave here the whole code. Just in case you can identify if the new public function hookDisplayNav is conflicting or something.

Well, I have made a pause on this issue for the last few days and today I decided to get back on it and I found out what the problem was.

I was using the $link variable without it being defined. So I just added $link = new Link(); before $link->getCatImageLink()

$link = new Link();
$this->_menu .= '<li '.$selected.'>';
$this->_menu .= '<a href="'.Tools::HtmlEntitiesUTF8($category_link).'">'.$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default').$category->name.'</a>';

The problem now, has you can see in the following image, is that this doesn't displays the images, only their paths.

So, what I did was to get the $link->getCatImageLink() to its own line:

$link = new Link();
$this->_menu .= '<li '.$selected.'>';
$this->_menu .= '<a href="'.Tools::HtmlEntitiesUTF8($category_link).'">'.$category->name.'</a>';
$this->_menu .= '<img src="'.$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default').'" alt="" title="" />';

The images did show, but not the way they should:

I only uploaded one subcategory image so far (for Fromages de Brebis), but it displays the same default "?" image that the subcategories that don't have an image defined. The path to the image is correct and I really don't know why it's not displaying it.

Any idea what the problem might be?

Ok, so today I got into this problematic again and I found out why the question mark was showing instead of the category images. The path that the getCatImagelink was returning was the correct one, but the image simply didn't show.

Then I changed this

$this->_menu .= '<img src="'.$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default').'" alt="" title="" />';

to this

$this->_menu .= '<img src="http://'.$link->getCatImageLink($category->link_rewrite, $category->id_image, 'large_default').'" alt="" title=""/>';

Even if the path was correct, it didn't automatically called the http:/ like it happens on the rest of the site. I find that odd, something must be missing but well, since it's working i'm happy about it. I'll dive into this matter so I can better understand the problem and, if possible, to correct it.

So that's it, we can finally mark it as solved.
