could the "Reference" be duplicated?

hello

I want to know if the reference field when you add a new Item can be duplicated? If yes, Is there anyway to define items with something such as Item number that defines items on my store only?

 

and also the  Pre-tax wholesale price:  Does that means how much is my cost?

Do you mean if it's possible to have 3 products with the same reference? If so, yes, it is :)And to the second one, yes

1) it is possible but remember, that some wholesalers using reference field as a product identification number, it mean that you will have troubles with updates quantities etc. (if you will use reference field as a only one unique product identification field)

I am not gonna actually have any inventory on stock. I work in the warehouse where i will be selling their merchandise. and they have (item number field) which identify each item uniquely, and so they can look up for the item with this number. and thats what i am trying to have on my shop, to have a unique number for each product that allows me to look up the item with. unless there is an easier way to look up items on the shop.
