Product Images Not Showing up in Front Office

I am using the newest version, and it is a fresh install. I am just getting to adding products and I just noticed that even though the images show up just fine when I upload in the back end, they do not show up in the product listing. It says that it cannot find it. I did some poking around and found that the url that the image is trying to link to is, for example, http://wooffpup.com/petstore/img/p/3/8/38-large.jpg -- which doesn't exist. However http://wooffpup.com/petstore/img/p/3/8/38.jpg does. So either it is supposed to be using the second link and is not for some reason, or it is just not generating the large thumbnail for some reason. But it is generating all the other thumbnails just fine so it isn't a permissions issue. Any ideas?

I forgot to add - when I FTP to that folder, there IS an image called 38-large_default so perhaps that is what it should be looking for but its appending the _default for some reason?
