Customer Service emails not being "Marked as handled"

Just did an upgrade to version 1.5.3.1. Have found that when answering any of the customer service email, after the response is sent, the email does not get marked as handled anymore. That always happened in 1.4.9 and any other previous version, but isn't happening in 1.5.3.1. We have to go in, after the response and manual mark them as handled. Is that normal? Is there something to change or adjust so that they automatically get marked as handled when a response is sent?

 

Appreciate any help.
