Newbie guide to essential basic steps needed for SEO

I've only just installed the latest version of Prestashop

I want to setup a few ecommerce shops

 

Question: are there any basic *must* do steps that I need to do? Like maybe register with the directories, make submissions to Google and Yahoo??

 

Let's assume that my shops aren't selling anything special, so harder for me to get attention because I'm selling rocks from the moon or something!

 

What do I do? Where do I start? How do I get traffic to my websites?

PPC vs SEO - what's the correct ratio and what should my budget be?

 

What if I wanted to focus on SEO... what methods should I use to get traffic?

 

I'm not looking for a single answer that will answer all of the above!

Just want to know where I should start off

 

My shops will be a little extra special for many different reasons - so hopefully, I'll be able to get attraction that way - but then, I still need guidance on what to do - like maybe do press releases? Interact in different forums? Write blogs? Use Twitter.Facebook/Pinterest?

 

Any replies would be great

You have pretty much answered your own question. All the things you've mentioned are actually helpful to attract visitors to your website.

But in order for your site to be easily findable, you need to do some things which are not quite so obvious as writing in twitter or blogs. I suggest a good read - Google SEO Secrets. That's a good book for a newbie. I think you can find it online. For me, it was like opening my eyes on SEO, which was totally unfamiliar.
