Global vars for 1.4

Hi all,

I am trying to write a module but it would appear a lot has changed between what people have asked about 1.3 and 1.4 everything I have tried doesnt work because its out dated information.

Is there a place that lists global variables?

What I am trying to do it get the total weight of all the items in cart for my custom shipping module.

Also it would be good to know how to get the dimensions of the items from each product. Except I really dont know how to get the values as I dont know what the variables are

I have scoured the forum but i cant see anything that specifically relates to v1.4
