We're currently in version 1.6.9 - what is the urgency of upgrading?

Hi Forum, we are running our webshop in 3 markets, and currently generating approx 30 orders/day.

We're still on the old version 1.6.9 - and we wanna understand the urgency of upgrading/swapping to a newer version? 

We are amateurs in terms of understanding the technical landscape. So we request feedback, from users that have done the swap?

The questions are:
1.We're quite happy with this old version 1.6.9, but we understand it's old, so we need to understand the urgency in terms of swapping to newer version. Should we start looking in to it immediately, or can we put it on hold for a year?

2.Also when moving to a new version, should we go for 1.7 or go directly to the the 8.0 version?

Would appreciate some feedback.

Main reasons are:

1. Security, older PS versions may fall to some hacking attacks.

2. Features, it happens more and more often, than new modules offering you some nice features and improvments, are not developed for 1.6 any more.

Skip the 1.7, go straight to 8.1, it's much better, many bugs fixed.

If you are happy leave it like it is.
Buy a 2nd Domain and build a new shop on it. If it were me I'd also use a different server. Fallback is good to have. 
That way you won't be moving and give your customers more choices.

Thanks a lot, I would for sure start to build something on an additional server, and make sure the major stuff are working before swapping, but we've got a small brand, so one day, we will for sure make a permanent swap.

Leave those 2 alive. doing it right you can conquer 2 search terms that way.
