Customization of Products in front end problem

I'm using version 1.2.5.0 at the moment (upgrade soon hopefully!)

Some product have customization fields and also has product combinations set up.

If
a customer selects a particular set of combinations and then enters the customisation data and saves it
then
the product combinations previously selected return to the default and the selections previously made are lost


Sometimes a customer does this and does notice but sometimes they don't.

Is there a way of preventing this behaviour from happening?
