PS sending multiple emails, will not save SMTP or "Do not send" settings. 1.6.1.24

We recently added SSL to my PS 1.6 and have been plagued with multiple emails being sent with recent orders.  It appears that the "call back" or sent confirmation is not being received and every few minutes it will send out another Order Confirmation or Payment Received email.   I cannot get the SMTP or "Never send emails" feature to save and the emails keep going out.

When creating an order, I get a 504 error and the status is not saved.

Please help.  I'm bombarding customers and may have to take the site down if I cannot get it to stop.
