Meaning of IMAP settings in Customer Service options

Hi all,

I'm a new Prestashop (1.7.8.5) user and I'm very perplexed about the reason of the IMAP settings in the Customer service options. I mean, if I don't configure this section, it looks to me that all works well. I receive emails from clients in the frontend contacts page (I configured SMTP settings to send emails), and I can reply to them in the backend. Client receive the answers and can reply to them (of course, in the site frontend). So, why I should configure the IMAP settings in the Customer service options? What benefit I could get from filling IMAP parameters there?
