Fastest way is to get a module, that not showing product combinations, that are not in stock.

Use built in option in preferences>products>product page>show unavailable attributes on product page
Disable it and unavailable combinations will be hidden.

How would this work though if making use of the "Availability preferences - Behavior when out of stock"
If I want to show some of the combinations available for backorder even when on 0 or less in stock but some other combinations not available on backorder.

preferences>products>product page>show unavailable attributes on product page

The above setting would keep them all active since the whole product would be on "Allow Orders"

You will need some extra module with that logic, so you can specify which product should be left visible for back orders. I did something similar using hookactionPresentProduct.
