Migration of customers and products to new database and resolving multiple errors

Hello everyone

Looking for some help in upgrading my ancient 1.4.4.1.  Ideally I would like to keep my products and customers.

I am currently being bombarded by Russion spam accounts.  

I also cannot use the 1-click-upgrade - it simply doesn't work - I have tried several times and I've had to rollback.

I now have multiple errors in several modules - this morning Payment via Paypal has stopped functioning.

I am quite techie but this is beyond me.  Yes I have thought about starting again from scratch but I want to keep my customers and products.  If I have to though then I will do it.

Any help greatly appreciated, I would be happy to pay a developer ... I would be interested to know how long you think this would take and how much it would cost.
