Upgrading from GitHub

Recommended Posts

I've a stable 1.6.23 shop running at a UK ISP ( Fasthosts.)

They are now asking me to move the domain/webspace to use PHP 7.3.

Latest version  from prestshop.com is 1.6.1.24

But on GitHub there is a version 1.6.1.25 which works with PHP 7.2 and ( from the comments) PHP 7.3.

https://github.com/PrestaShop/PrestaShop-1.6/issues/3

How can I upgrade to this version?

Or is it time to bite the bullet and move to 1.7 ?

Thanks for your reply.

Fasthosts will 'support' earlier versions of PHP but they charge to do it (6 GBP per month) but I agree - the sensible solution is to upgrade.

So I'm intending to follow the instructions from the prestashop website.

Going from 1.6.1.23 to 1.7.7.1 which was released on Jan 11th 2021.

It's a 'basic' shop so don't anticipate any problems  - famous last words.

don't anticipate problems, I love your optimism, manual upgrade is for 'experts'.

I recommend this process

  • create a new copy of your shop in a subdomain for example, this will become your new production shop
  • from hosting backup your new dev copy  files and mysql, allows easy restore so you can upgrade again if you encountered errors first/nth time
  • you will need upgrades to your 1.6 modules/themes detailed as they will not work in 1.7.  I recommend leo/apollo themes, very feature rich
  • now perform the 1-click upgrade process

really little to it, it's important at upgrade time to set disable 3rd party modules and 'overrides'.  They will not work anyway from a 1.6 to 1.7.....

after you get native upgrade running, i.e. admin....

then you are ready to install/configure your 3rd party modules required for your shop.  (use default theme while you are doing this).

one you have natives and your cart working, get a nice new kick arse leo/apollo theme..there are others...(before installing back up your work!)

Make something great!  but follow good process with backup..

then when ready to go live?  copy  old production, so you have historical, some may not be able to sync orders/customers, small shops should just manually add them, it's complicated loool.

that's it...let us know how you get on.
