Order confirmation emails to customers

I'm just upgrading from 1.6.1.20 to 1.7.6.8 The new shop isn't live yet but I'm doing some testing. I've just made a couple of test orders which have gone through and registered in the back office, but I did not get a confirming email as the customer I logged into the shop as. I did receive an email from the back office confirming a new order, but nothing sent to me as  customer. Obviously I need to change a setting somewhere to make sure customers get confirming emails but not sure where. Can anyone enlighten me please?
