Hi:
If you use the Backoffice to add the tracking number that should be done automatically. In my case works, sends me an email with in_transit template and the tracking URL (the url you define in the carrier with the tracking number you added for the order).

i use the back office and order lookup , but i want to send the tracking number straight away to my customer that why at the moment the need to log in to check the tracking number, if that possible? i think may be is this global variable $tracking_number ?

Hi:
I don't understand because if you use the backoffice Prestashop should  send already an email. Now should be sending an email with the URL+ Tracking number but sends the email. 

In that template in_transit you can use the template var {shipping_number} that is only the tracking. Or the {followup} that is the  URL with the tracking number.
If you want to send the email on demand (even if the tracking is already added), i don't know the way at least, probably would be needed coding.

Check if you receive the automatic email when you add the tracking number.
