The problem is caused by a tag in the JPEG header which defines the camera orientation when the picture was taken (see https://www.impulseadventure.com/photo/exif-orientation.html). Prestashop respects this tag and tries to derotate the image which is the reason why the image is flipped in the shop. The solution for me was to remove this tag by opening the image in mac preview and saving it as copy. I think this proceeding should work with any other image viewer.
