PrestaShop Uncovers the Future of Mobile Commerce

If you were to take all the smartphones purchased in 2011 and place them together end to end, they would circle the earth more than eight times. That’s nearly 462 million smartphones!

The world of online sales is booming. But perhaps what’s more impressive is the growth of the m-commerce market. According to comScore, 4 of 5 consumers use smartphones to shop. And in 2012, worldwide mobile payment transactions will surpass $171.5 billion, up 62% from $106 million last year.

These figures project a bright future for the m-commerce market, but what will it look like two years from now? Are mobile devices really the way of the future?

In an effort to answer these questions, PrestaShop experts spent days conducting research, analyzing data and compiling results. What we’ve discovered we gladly share in our latest infographic, “Measuring the Future of Online Retail.”

Results:  Not only are young people using mobile devices to shop online, older generations are also getting involved. Did you know that 53% of all mobile users from the age of 35 to 44 use their devices make online purchases?

Today, nearly 45% of all e-commerce merchants have adapted a mobile interface. This means more than half of the world’s online merchants have yet to create mobile extensions of their online store(s).  Why is this important? Imagine for a second how big the m-commerce market would be if every online merchant went mobile.

So what does it all mean?

In an effort to keep it simple, m-commerce is the way of the future. As technology grows, so does the market for mobile retail. So if you’ve yet to create a mobile extension of your online store, now’s the time!
