What makes a host a good webhost for PrestaShop?

Recommended Posts

I would like to suggest Webhosting Buzz. I have used them for several years personally, and I have maybe 30 or so clients hosted there. They are a great company as far as support goes. They have great uptime, there servers run Prestashop awesomely. They also have a plan for like $10 a month that includes a dedicated ip address and an ssl certificate.

A good webhosting is only as good as you have optimized PrestaShop. Cache everywhere, APC, SSD. Try DigitalOcean.

My FBTR is very slow. Isn't that the webhost? Why is DigitalOcean good?

How big is your shop (products / categories)?

How many visitors do you get a month? how many do you expect to get in 6-12 months?

I want to spend 30usd per month. What can I expect, what should I expect?

You should pick a host by a budget, a host should match the requirement of your shop...

Do you really want to have a slow site? it will likely cost you more in sales than save you on hosting.

Do you have a slow site for 30usd?

I second what Tomer said. An online store is a business, you have to treat it that way. Think of a slow store as a store that is far away from your customers. You will get less business that way, a faster store is like one that is closer to your customers. I think a lot of people miss the fact that with an online store, you need to re-invest money back into the store like you would with a brick and mortar store.

it's like getting a fish tank, you wish you had gotten a bigger one.

Go with a vps...try to stay out of a long term contract so you can move down if it's more than your business can afford.  Host others for a little side money if you like...just make sure you can back up your shop easily as well as any other domains you run there...

Speed baby...the fastest way to lose a sale is to make us wait...for anything...we want instant gratification.

Very interesting information ... thanks all for the help provided through this marvellous forum.

I'm very new to Prestashop, I have an on-line store running on oscommerce (for the last 8 years) and it's time to change. I'm preparing a migration to Prestashop, and I have been searching information about what type of hosting I must use. I have obtained different answers from several suppliers, and I'm a bit lost.

The only thing that i'm sure is that the hosting must be as quick as possible (always getting a good ratio speed/$). I have read also that is better to have the server in the same country you are selling in, and in other posts have read that this is not so important ...

I'm a bit lost.

I would gladly accept any suggestions from this Prestashop community, i'm not asking for an specific company, just which type of server would be better for my store (shared, VPS, dedicated , whatever....) and the requirements that should meet. I have read a lot about this and there is a lot of info in this forum... , all cache related stuff is important, especially memcache if I'm not wrong ..

My store has been running oscommerce in a shared server for 8 years, and quite well without any important problems, 3000 different products and an average of 27000 visitors/month. Any recommendation for that figures? I'm looking Speed as El Patron has said..

Thanks in advance.

One thing you should look on is physical location of the server. We sell to UK market and we used a US based hosting, which was a mistake. Both response time and transfers were worse than expected purely due to transfer time under the ocean.

Also please make sure you can switch providers (i.e do not sign lengthy contracts). Moving provider is painful, but still better than being forced to pay for inadequate service.

Thanks Harryfay for your counsel. Now I only have to choose the type of server: shared, Vps or dedicated. I' m full of doubts..... 3000 products and 27000 visitors month, until now I have been in a shared server and no problems, but seems that Prestashop is much more exigent than Oscommerce.... I have contacted several providers and now I am more confused than before.... Diferent answers for same question!

in my opinion managed VPS option will be enough for you right now, 27000 vistors is not a lot... not enough to invest in a dedicated server.

VPS - this option is definitely cheaper that dedicated server - You can save some money and spend it on advertising etc.

I would usually recommend digital ocean for a smaller site, but in your case i would suggest Linode. They are a good choice for a VPS. They have been around for a decade or so now, so its a solid choice. . Digital Ocean is all SSD though i have heard that does not necessarily make it faster than a Linode or any other HDD host. Both give you options to test out their product before taking the jump. Both are totally unmanaged VPS though, so keep that in mind. If you dont have time to fix things yourself, you need managed hosting. But i dont have any recommendations on those.

One last thing though, you say you have been with a shared host for 8 years without much problems , dont they have a VPS option? Usually, you get tired of shared hosting as your site grows, but since you mention you have been running on it for 8 years, i think your current host is doing a fine job with it.

The major difference between a VPS and a dedi server is, while a VPS gives you guaranteed RAM, a dedi is a full machine so all the resources are yours. VPS usually shares CPU cycles with other users on the box. Though with a properly configured VPS, you will never know the difference.

Thanks Indus! Very helpfull

About the hosting I will probably go with mine, as you say 8 years without serious problems is the best guarantee. I am very new to prestashop and I want to be sure that I choose the faster and best option to run my store in, not looking for the cheaper but yes for a solid one to avoid any problems. During these last weeks I have been reading a lot about this, and all the advices i have received go in the same direction, to get a hosting specializated in Prestashop, mine is not (they do not have a prestashop pack or hosting option full optimized for prestashop)

I am not sure about what type of Vps i must use, i guess that something simple would work. I have this in mind :

Cloud Vps with 1 gb of RAM, 40 gb of hardware drive and 500 gb bandwith fully managed.... 49 eur month (67 Usd)

Any other advice will be welcome!

I do think it is necessary. Personally if your site does not use it, I will not use your site. Even if paypal is using it, my personal info is being submitted on your site. Also when I see sites without SSL I think they are cutting corners and I wonder what else they cut corners on. Having an ssl certificate costs around $8 a year, that is not a lot of money to spend on your business.

Then you do not know how to market effectively. If most of the sites in your niche do not use SSL, buy a SSL certificate and use it. Then let everyone know that your site is safe and the other sites are not safe. Write blog posts, post it on their facebook pages, twitter, ect. Let everyone know your site is safer.

What makes a host a good webhost for PrestaShop?

Can you suggest me one or two?

Why are they good? Why are they good for PrestaShop?

Not more than 30usd/month

Try Cloudways starting $5 (Cloud Hosting with dedicated IP)
