I am also thinking here of 2 ways. For all the php as module have a very long script can run.
This can regenerate the images as it is currently running without problems.
But since more and more web hosting provider in CGI Wrap (as I) or other methods to the account does not give too much resources u have to dodge new methods ago.
I would suggest these two:
1st The user can all pictures a flag assign these images will call on the next page under the Settings regenerated.
This would not be bad if it is only for certain products could make like the IDs of the products as Comma Separated Values per box.
2nd The process will generate new image after x seconds rebooted. This value can be found in the config set. Or even better. After each picture is the process with the next screen, restart you could also see how many images are made and how many images still have to be made.
This should be yes with JQuery and Ajax go.
What do you think of it.

I wanted so that the team of prestashop 2 possibilities show can solve the problem!
So rather a message to the team instead of you.
