10 tips for better SEO

So your online store only appears on the 20th page of Google results ? It’s not the end of the world if you follow our 10 tips. You’ll soon see your e-store move into pole position !

1. Register your e-store on the free directories

This first thing to do is to register with the directories. This might seem a little time-consuming but it is the best way to move your site up in the result rankings. So you’ll need to figure out which key words your site should use for the search engines. A description (from 500 to 1000 signs) will be required – make sure you adapt it to each directory.

2. Optimize your tags

Tags are bits of text present in the html code which are read and digested by Google and other search engines’ spider robots. They are used to define and categorize your site, and evaluate which search terms are relevant to your site.
Don’t forget the Title tag : the title of the page. It contains text which appears in blue in pages and Google results. It provides important information for the site visitor but also for the search engines. It should be written so as to encourage future visitors to click on your link. The title should be succinct (between 5 and 10 words, roughly 60 characters) and use your name and the key words for your business activity.
You should optimize each page of your site with its own title that includes the name of your company and a summary of the page contents.

3. Clear and original product titles

The product titles are a key factor for Google – it has the most weight and Google looks at them first. Your titles must include a detailed description of each product (brand, type of product, color, etc.). Along with the description, the product title is one of the key elements of your SEO. Make sure that none of your products have the same title.

4. Pay attention to your URL !

To be optimized, the URL must include intelligible names. It’s better to use a hyphen to space key words.
These key words are also important for Google. So avoid URLs with too many numbers or that are too long.

5. Create a blog

A blog is a very efficient way of producing content. And search engines love new content, which shows that the site is active. By inserting the right key words in your articles, you can perform miracles. And kill two birds with one stone, as this is also a good way to communicate with your customers.

6. Title your photos properly !

We don’t often consider photo titles but they’re a key element in SEO too. Google can’t see and analyze pictures, but it can read the titles of those pictures. Before putting up pictures on your site, give them titles. For example, « IPod Nano Red 8GB » will always be better read and analyzed than « image7 ». Think about it !

7. Adding content

We don’t say it often enough but Google and the other search engines are very hungry for new content. Write as much as you can on your site – you’ll make it more attractive and alive. You can do it by creating CMS pages that explain who you are and how you work, or your payment and delivery policies. Basically, there’s no limit here.
You can also put your key words in bold. Avoid making your text too dense, so give it space, highlight it, and organize it with bullet-points and tags.

8. Avoid duplicating content

When the same content is detected on 2 different URLs, Google sees it as duplicate content – doubled content that it judges as having little qualitative value. So you should try to avoid it if you don’t want to be penalized by the search engines.

9. Increase the number of hypertext links to your pages

Google’s PageRank helps the search engine to assess the relevance of a site or blog. Essentially, the higher your PageRank, the higher you’ll appear in the search results. To increase your ranking, there’s no real secret : you’ll just need to increase the number of hypertext links leading to your pages. So build links by forming partnerships with other stores/sites that can add a link to your site or products.

10. Track your progress on Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a very powerful statistical analysis tool that helps analyze and understand user visits to your site. By giving you precise information and cross-checking data, you can understand what interests your customers and adapt your site accordingly to generate even more traffic.
Google Analytics is a free tool which will show you the number of visitors, page views, referring site, and browsers used. It’s a genuine gold mine of information !
Start now by putting these tips into practice and watch your traffic increase ! And if you want to go even farther into SEO, don’t forget to check out our free and detailed guide (31 pages). So what are your tips for getting to Number 1 ?

Actually using clear and original titles will hurt your search results unless you are selling original products. If someone is searching for beats by dre headphones, you would want your title to say “beats by dre headphones” which is what everyone else uses.

The building the hyperlinks part is only a so-so way. You don’t want to link to everyone, you don’t want to buy links. You want links to be placed naturally.

  2. I will be so happy when someone finds a way of merging Prestashop with the WordPress Loop. Having a blog inherent in Presta’s CMS would make it the most powerful, multi-use CMS out there.

  4. What are the free directories you are talking about in the first bullet? Do you have a list we can use to make sure we are in all of them?

    1. Register your e-store on the free directories
    - absolutely irrelevant nowadays according to the top SEO experts. Google is looking for natural links (like stated in the previous post), not registrations in some directories.

  7. It’s a wonderful article full of great tips that will work to increase popularity of the site in search engines. I would like to read the other 31 page article referred to, but found no link.

  8. Regarding point 8 if you do have duplicate pages for whatever reason you can always use the Canonical meta tag to suggest to search engines which one to index.
Google will not necessarily penelize you for having duplicate content, for example it’s quite OK to have Apple iPod under the category MP3 players and Apple giving you two distinct URLs MP3Players/apple-ipod and Apple/apple-ipod but the same page content.

  9. Number 9 should not be hypertext links, it should be called back links which is the correct SEO terminology. Which is simply people putting links to your site on their site.

  10. Another tips is to create short videos and put them on YouTube these will also appear in the main Google search and also in Google Video search. Of course don’t forget to embed the videos on the relevant product page.

  11. Also ensure you create a site map so that search engines know the structure of your site. And also create a Google Webmaster account so that you can see any maintenance/malware/SEO issues with your site.

  12. Fixing the things mentioned above, is with no doubt a start, but leaning back and waiting for the results is not the way to go. SEO is an ongoing process that takes a lot of time in the future, and if are you not prepared to spend the time on the long run, you shouldn’t start. It simply does not give you a sufficient Return On Investment.

As an example, in addition to the things above, and for long term results, you need to have a social network strategy and use the most used social media as twitter, facebook and especially Google+ because Google is starting to link and use the +1 together and use these recommandations as a factor in placing the search results in the right order. Even more, using the social media, helps your pagerank on time, because the linkprofil as mentioned above is then looking more natural.

If you are not in it for the long run, then take the easy way out and buy some clicks through the different ppc-solutions as Adwords, facebook ads ect.

If you are in it for the long run, the best advise is to spend time on, and only on, the keywords that are significant for your shop, products, services ect. Do NOT try to get a top position on “cheap bikes” if the bikes in your shop are not cheap, compeared to the others on the market.

  13. Hi Pauline. A very good abstract about SEO. A good tip for search relevant links is the application “Scrapebox”. You can find reams of Blogs for content relevant links.

  14. Speed and page download time is also a very important factor. If your site takes too many seconds or even sub seconds to load then that can hurt its performance in the search engine results pages too. If you download pagespeed insights (a plugin for google chrome) it will analyse your site and score it out of 100. It also advises your what performance improvements can be implemented if not done already.

  15. One of the definite advantages of Presta is a wide range of plugins/modules. As in WordPress world smart set of Top5 plugins is all you need to work effectively. Can you suggest such a minimal working set? Thank you!

  20. Unbelievably negative comments from a bunch of ungrateful so and sos. The author here titled this top 10, not a complete worldly guide to everything you need to consider to optimise your site. You guys should be grateful someone has taken the tip to share some useful pointers, particularly if it’s all new to you. Take it for what it is, a helpful guide and be grateful.

  21. But how do I actually open my index (first page) and where should i insert meta tags and title. I´m trying to help a friend and she does not know which one is her start page, what i name is and in which cathalogue it is placed. I think she has 3 main cahalogues, en, es, sv, how can I help her to open the first page? Thanks in advance.

Hi Markus, thank you for the reply. PrestaShop offers the most powerful and flexible SEO options available to any Ecommerce software.

  25. Merci bien Pauline.
I believe that Pauline was attempting to give a solid overview of the process, more from a shop owner’s point of view rather than a professional SEO expert.
If she’d done that, then I guess some of us wouldn’t have understood the language.
    Cheers for the tips!
